The Freestyle routines — which we’ll see Monday, May 19 on the first night of the Dancing With the Stars Season 18 Finals — are considered the make-or-break dances. But are they really that important?

So many fans seem to already have their “team” by the time the Freestyles are performed, and maybe they even had their team before the cast was announced, based on whoever would be paired with their favorite pro. Others watch the show and develop favorites as the couples dance together and interact in video packages or elsewhere.

But now that we’re at the Finals, how many fans out there — longtime or casual — wait until seeing the Freestyles on Monday night and vote based on that routine? Have you ever had your vote swayed by a Freestyle, in one direction or another?

Season 8 springs to mind. Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke dominated the season and were favored to win, but then Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas broke out a killer Freestyle, the only Freestyle to get a perfect score that night. Both couples tied for overall points on the Finale, but Shawn and Mark ended up winning the season. Did the Freestyle affect that vote? On the other hand, all three Finalists got perfect scores for their Freestyles last season, although Amber Riley and Derek Hough ended with the highest scores across the two-night Finale. Did the Freestyle affect their win at all, or were they going to win anyway, thanks to their other high scores and their fan base?

Just curious if the Freestyle has affected your vote at any point in DWTS history. Maybe it does every season? Maybe it has a few times in the past? Or maybe you’re one of the fans that watches the show but never votes?

The DWTS Season 18 Finals will air over two nights: Monday, May 19 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. ET and Tuesday, May 20 from 9 to 11 p.m. ET on ABC.
