Last year, Derek became the first DWTS pro to win an Emmy for choreography. Here’s hoping he can pull a repeat! Derek is the only winner so far, but he’s far from the only DWTS choreographer to get an Emmy nomination, from either a competing routine or a Results Show/Macy’s routine.
Last year, Allison Holker was nominated with Derek, in addition to Derek winning his solo trophy; in 2012, Travis Wall, Teddy Forance, and Nick Lazzarini were nominated; in 2011, Mark Ballas was nominated; in 2010, Derek was nominated alone and with Chelsie Hightower; in 2009, Derek and Julianne Hough were nominated together; in 2008, Julianne was nominated; in 2007, Louis van Amstel was nominated; in 2007, Cheryl Burke and Tony Dovolani were nominated individually; and Cheryl and Nick Kosovich were nominated together.
The DWTS Emmy nomination process can be complicated, but for the 2014 Emmys, all routines from the fall 2013 Season 17 (winners: Amber Riley and Derek) and spring 2014 Season 18 (winners: Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy) were eligible for submission — including Freestyles. But obviously only Derek was nominated this past year, for his routines Human,Ameksa, and Too Darn Hot.
All of the DWTS pros are amazing, and we can’t wait to see what they do in Season 19, but which other pros would you have nominated from Season 17 and Season 18? Vote in the poll below, and maybe hit the comments to name the specific routines you would’ve honored, in addition to Derek’s three dances.
DWTS Season 19 premieres this fall on ABC.
