At the risk of jinxing everything, we’re going to just assume pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy will return for Dancing With the Stars Season 19. It’s just a matter of what role he takes on.

Maks has already said he’d like Season 18 celeb champion Meryl Davis to be his last partner. He’s also mentioned how exhausting it is to be a pro on the show, and he’s marveled that Derek Hough has been through the process enough time to win five trophies. But Maks has said he’s done with pro life before. We didn’t expect him back for Season 18 at all, since he was away from us for a couple of seasons and only returned to guest judge one night of Season 17.

However, that guest judging stint was apparently enough fun that Maks has said he’d accept a permanent judging job. Will it happen? That’s not entirely his call. There’s a new showrunner in town in Rob Wade, who is actually returning to DWTS after leaving in Season 11.

Rob talked about Maks’ future during ABC’s All-Star Party at the 2014 Summer TCA Press Tour.

Rob told the press he recently reached out to Maks and seemed hopeful that Maks would be back for Season 19, although he couldn’t confirm a return. “I've just come back to the show, but I was on the show in Season 1 and Maks came on in Season 2, so I've known Maks for 10 years now and he's a very good friend," Rob said (via E! News). "I'm absolutely hoping Maks comes back to the show. I don't know whether it's going to be as a dancer. I think there's a number of different things we can talk to him about and the way he'd be involved in the show. Maks will always be part of Dancing With the Stars in some way."

It seems like the winds are blowing Maks closer to the judging table, especially if fellow pro Cheryl Burke was right in saying there’s talk of a fourth judge this season, with Len Goodman taking some weeks off. But we’ll see what The Powers That Be decide. It’s just good to hear that conversations are being had and thought is being put into what everyone wants to do next and how their talents can best be utilized. And it never hurts to have the backing of the boss, so that’s another positive sign for Maks!

What role would you most like to see Maks play in the fall 2014 season — competing pro, guest judge, permanent judge, or other?

DWTS Season 19 premieres Monday, September 15 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
