Maksim Chmerkovskiy just announced his retirement as a professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars. Granted, he’s said something similar before, but this time it seems legit. But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t return in another capacity…
Pro bros Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy were just on The View today (Tuesday, July 29) and Maks decided it was a good time to make an announcement about his pro career. He'd already said he wanted his Season 18 champion, Meryl Davis, to be his last partner, and he's apparently sticking with that plan.
"I'm done dancing," Maks said on The View (via E! News). "I feel like it's time." He added that he loved the experience as a pro. "When I came back to the show, it was not the same…I was different, probably…When I came back, I saw this amazing talent, Val included…I looked at it and thought they can do much more and better, I was taking up a huge spot.”
So with Maks out of the running as a pro, someone else can take his spot this fall. However, as The View co-host and previous Val DWTS partner Sherri Shepherd clarified, Maks is done as a pro but could stay with the show in another role. Like judge. Maks has made it clear that he would accept a job on the show as a judge. So if he’s choosing this moment to say he’s done as a pro dancer, but not necessarily done with DWTS entirely, that might be a good sign that he will indeed be returning on the panel — whether as a recurring guest judge or as a permanent new judge, if they add a fourth.
How do you feel about the news that Maks does not plan to return as a pro? Are you disappointed? Did you already expect that? Hopeful that he’ll still continue with DWTS, as the showrunner hopes?
DWTS Season 19 premieres Monday, September 15 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
