UPDATE: We don't recommend holding your breath in the hopes of a Kirstie Alley-Maksim Chmerkovskiy reconciliation. Indeed, following Maks having addressed their falling out, Kirstie has posted a very strange tweet that appears to be calling him out.
On August 1, Kirstie tweeted: "Dear Sir..after you have a— raped me there is really no reason to include 'I wish you the best'.. It's rhetorical."
Yikes! If this tweet was indeed about Maks — as many of Kirstie's Twitter followers assume — then it's clear that they're not quite ready to patch things up.
Original story (7/30/2014): It hurts our hearts to think that two-time Dancing With the Stars partners Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are no longer close. Sadly, Maks shared the news last night in the “After Show” segment of Watch What Happens Live.
Kirstie and Maks were the runners-up of DWTS Season 12, then competed together on Season 15 All-Stars, which was Maks’s last season until returning this past spring on Season 18, which he won with Meryl Davis. Maks and Kirstie had such a great connection — they’d bicker like an old married couple, but also seemed to have a deep friendship.
However, last night a caller into the Bravo show asked Maks if Kirstie, a well-known member of The Church of Scientology, ever tried to convert him. Maks said no. Then host Andy Cohen asked if Maks got along well with Kirstie. "Until recently," Maks said. What happened? "She stopped getting along with me," Maks said, with a little laugh.
Maks said he thinks the world of Kirstie, he's not judging her religion. He said he's (sort of) Jewish and doesn't really believe in "science fiction," but whatever. "We had a great relationship. I thought we had a great relationship. If it was something else, or not, I don't know, but I got a message that now I'm associating with other people that she can't be associated with. I am no longer to be spoken with. Sorry, but it is what it is." He said he only got the message that they were on the outs through a friend.
Andy mentioned how DWTS alum Leah Remini, who had a public split with Scientology, was just on the show, and Andy said he loved her. He and guest Joan Rivers thought it was brave for Leah to do what she did. Maks said he loves people and doesn't judge anyone’s religion. (As he noted, his best friend — DWTS pro Tony Dovolani, who danced with Leah — is Muslim.) "I just feel like it's sad that [Kirstie and I] got through so much together, and I feel like I've helped her, and this is where we're at now. But I still think the world of her and wish her all the best."
That is sad. They were such a good team. Maybe someday they can be a team again, but … the ball is in Kirstie’s court on that one.
DWTS Season 19 premieres Monday, September 15 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
