One of the many great things about pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy — besides his sexy scruff — is that he’s always candid. After the Dancing With the Stars Season 14, Season 14, Week 4: Results show, Maks talked to On the Red Carpet about exactly what happened to Melissa Gilbert to injure her during their Rock Week Paso Doble and how upset he is for his brother, Val, because Val feels responsible for Sherri Shepherd being eliminated.

(It was just a bad week for the Chmerkovskiys all around! Except for the part where Maks hugged his ex-fiancee Karina Smirnoff under the red lights of the Results Show. That was kind of a breakthrough.)

Melissa’s injury and Maks’ own Paso pain — including pain at their 7s from judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli — have put things into perspective. And it ain’t lookin’ good. “I don’t want to make this into a life-or-death kind of thing,” Maks told On the Red Carpet. “It’s just a show and we sometimes tend to forget it. I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing trying to put up a fight if it really doesn’t matter. We got our 7s that I disagree with, but I have to embrace it. I don’t know if taking it easy is the way to go but I feel obligated to our fans and I have a problem with coming out with some kind of mediocrity. I have a lot of questions in my head.”

The reporter said it sounds like there’s a possibility that they won’t dance next week if Maks or the doctors think Melissa is not ready. But it also sounds like Maks’ own body might not be at 100 percent. “What people don’t know — and I’ll speak on ‘our’ behalf, whoever ‘we’ are — is we go through a lot of injuries. You don’t see me talking about stuff, you know, and at one point I feel like — I never talk about this, I feel obligated to whoever my partners are. I will overcome whatever if it means that they’re satisfied, they’re happy … ‘cause this is the one time they’ll have this experience. To lose on my watch? It sucks. But honestly I don’t know if I want to push it.”

He’s frustrated about his own Rock Week situation, but also upset for his little brother, Val. “His last words to me were ‘I’m embarrassed’ because he feels responsible for Sherri’s loss.” They’re a proud family, Maks said, but it’s not coming from a place of being conceited — it’s from a life of working hard to get to that point as professional dancers. “I’m not saying Sherri was a shoo-in to win the show, but she represented so much good that letting her go is shocking.”

Here’s hoping for a full recovery for Melissa and no more pain — physical or existential — for Maks. We need them for Latin Week!
