They often get in the way. They tend to tick off judge Len Goodman. Props are just risky business on Dancing With the Stars.

On DWTS Season 13, Week 4, Chynna Phillips’ Tango was thrown off by excessive smoke and Carson Kressley blamed his own pirate sword for getting in the way of his Viennese Waltz. Let’s check out a few more DWTS props that probably should’ve been kept on the bench.

Kendra Wilkinson gets lost in the fog
The smoke machine has a thing for blondes. Let’s name it Hitchcock! Before it targeted Chynna the smoke machine went after Kendra Wilkinson at the start of her Season 12, Week 3 Rumba. It was Story Week and she wanted to tell her love story with husband Hank. But she got lost in the fog at the start of the routine and it seriously ticked her off. She told E! News after the show “I was fighting not to have it. I was asking people, ‘Please, I don't want to use this smoke machine.’ And they go, ‘Don't worry. We promise it will look good.’ But I made sure everyone knew that I didn't want it. But what happened was exactly what I thought was going to happen.” And yet even after this tirade, the smoke machine lived to strike again!

Mya eats Len's dust
They don't do the Jitterbug anymore, but back on Season 9 DWTS was experimenting with different dance styles. For Week 6, Mya and Dmitry Chaplin got the Jitterbug. Mya was a frontrunner for most of the season but this week she annoyed Len by using a duster prop at the start of her routine, wasting time instead of dancing. "Well, you know, the last refuge of the untalented is gimmicks and props,” Len told Mya. “And for me you're such a good dancer, it's not necessary to waste 20 bars polishing my desk. I'd much prefer you to polish up your performance." Ouch! The audience booed, but Mya nodded. She probably gave Dmitry a huge tongue lashing for that choreography. No more dusters!

Michael Bolton is in the dog house
Chelsie Hightower decided to go literal for Michael Bolton's Season 11, Week 2 Jive to Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog." To see this proud man crawl out of a dog house after a bone  — it was cringe-worthy. It was a bad start to a dance that never got better. Len said the routine needed a pooper scooper. Bruno wasn't being too cruel when he called it the worst Jive in 11 seasons. Bolton may have taken his anger out on Bruno, but he was probably ticked at Chelsie for putting him literally and figuratively in the DWTS dog house. They left that week.

Adam Carolla’s unicycle does the dancing
Adam rode a unicycle through the ballroom for a good 15 seconds at the start of his Paso Doble with Julianne Hough on Season 6. He performed as Zorro — or as he saw it "a silent porn star" — and Carrie Ann Inaba said he did a great job...until he got off the unicycle. It was a nice attempt to hide bad dancing, but no one was fooled. He was sent home that week.
