It’s been an eye-opening couple of months for Cheryl Burke. The Dancing With the Stars professional has opened up about her abuses both as a child and in relationships, and she’s not through talking about her hardships just yet.
“I went through a couple of abusive relationships during my whole high school career and I think it just stems from my childhood," she tells Ellen Degeneres. "But what really mattered most to me was dance and how dancing really influenced me in so many ways. I just followed my passion,” Burke told Ellen DeGeneres. “I never let dancing down. It was my one true thing that I stayed loyal to that really helped me get through the abuse.”
Still, at the time, Cheryl says the abuse cycle was difficult to break. “I mean, I guess I could never really escape. That was one of the scariest moments of my life when he did that and I think for me, I didn't turn to my parents right away,” Cheryl said. “I felt ashamed. I didn't know how to talk about it. But I did talk to a friend and I eventually got out of it.”
As for her rumored relationship with Chad Ochocinco, Cheryl says it didn’t happen in part because of her past. “I mean, we had a fling. We worked so much together. We had great chemistry. But it was the same pattern I had in the past with my boyfriends in the past. He was just really unavailable to me. I just knew that didn't work and I've moved on and he's obviously moved on.”
Seems like both are in a better place right now.
