Aly Raisman had an emotional night in the ballroom last week on Dancing With the Stars 2013 when she stunned the judges with a beautiful Contemporary dance dedicated to the best year of her life, 2012. And while the Olympic gold-medalist has made great strides on the dance floor (smile, Aly!), she recently told The Los Angeles Times, she couldn’t have done it without her partner Mark Ballas.

When asked what she’s learned from Mark, Aly replied, “To be a great dancer and performer you have to act.” Dancing With the Stars fans may remember that in Week 1 of the competition, judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Aly she needed to loosen up on the dance floor.

“Last night I felt so in the performance, so in the moment! It felt amazing; I really put myself back in the mind set of training,” she added. “I pictured all the long hours of training and how hard it was for me to make it to the Olympics, so I really wanted to show people how much sacrifice, dedication, and hard work it took.”

Aly and Mark topped the Leaderboard, with an impressive score of 27/30, but the 18-year-old nearly thought she failed when Len joked she didn’t get enough height on her last flip.

“I'm way too gullible!” she said. “I take everything they say so seriously because I want to impress them.”

Sounds like Aly shouldn’t worry too much — she has the highest score of the competition thus far!
