Andy Dick has been one of the most delightful surprises of Dancing With the Stars 2013. The controversial comedian had a true redemption story, proving his sobriety, dedication, and changed attitude to America during Season 16. But while his sweet personality and entertaining antics got him more than halfway through the competition, his poor technique finally caught up with him on Week 7, and he was sent home.
We have mixed feelings about Andy's elimination. On one hand, we've gotten to the point in the competition where actual dance skill starts to matter more and more. Andy was clearly trying, but he just didn't have the grace or athleticism needed to keep up with the remaining competitors. On dance technique alone, it's impossible to argue with his elimination.
However, for us, he was still one of the most enjoyable performers. Sure, his Week 7 Rumba wasn't his best — it's too slow a dance to really play to his strengths — but his joy of performing always shines through, making him a delight to watch. Plus, his pro partner Sharna Burgess, who was new this year, is quickly proving herself one of the most creative choreographers on the show.
Andy was never going to beat the top dancers this year, who all combine stellar technique and great performance quality, but we certainly wouldn't have minded seeing him hang on for another week or two.
