Bad news Dancing With the Stars fans: ratings for Season 16 just hit a series low for a performance night. Over 12.9 million people tuned in to see Zendaya earn the first perfect score of the season, but the rating for the coveted 18-48 demo fell below a 2.0 to a 1.9 for the first time ever. That news certainly isn’t getting any 10s from Len.

It’s no secret that the long-running ABC series, now in its 16th season, has been slipping in the ratings. Since the new season premiered in March, its overall audience — about 13 million viewers — has shrunk week to week. Last year, DWTS was drawing more than 17 million viewers. We’re not going to lie: this news doesn’t bode well for its future on network TV. Not to mention Season 16 is fan favorite Derek Hough’s last season (and fellow favorite Maksim Chmerkovskiy has no immediate plans to return to the show).

While a renewal for Season 17 seems imminent, if the ratings continue to slip to new lows, we wouldn’t be surprised if ABC decides to hang up its dancing shoes for good. Or perhaps, the network will decide to adopt the one-season-per-year format, which the pros and judges seem to support.

Either way, we’re concerned for our DWTS favorites. If last night’s meltdown between judges Len and Bruno can’t save the ratings, then what can?
