“It’s like a bad day care over here.”

Somebody better put Len Goodman in time-out. Whew! Well, at least Dancing With the Stars Season 16 Week 8 was memorable, mostly due to Len’s fight with … everyone. If only he had given Jacoby Jones a 10, at least then Jacoby’s mom would’ve been on his side. Instead, we’re just hoping Andy Dick can find him a nice spot for rehab.

In happier news, we still love it when the show brings back the pros. The Week 5 Side-by-Side Challenge added a fun, dynamic element and the Week 8 Trio Challenge also brought out the best in the couples, giving us the first perfect dance of the season. There was some truly great dancing, some pretty good dancing, and then poor Sean Lowe getting trampled by the judges (getting a “7” was the official slap in the face of the night). Considering the season’s trend, this may be the end for the former Bachelor. No trip to the fantasy suite. Then again, considering how the judges behaved this week, he may be getting off easy.

LEADERBOARD
Here’s a quick rundown of where the couples stand after Week 8.

Kellie & Derek — 28 + 27 = 55
Jacoby & Karina — 27 + 25 = 52
Ingo & Kym — 24 + 24 = 48
Sean & Peta — 21 + 21 = 42

Read on for a full recap of the Week 8 action:

ROUND 1

1. Zendaya Coleman & Valentin Chmerkovskiy — Foxtrot — Val asked Zendaya to do him a favor and get a lot more competitive this week. This song, “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” calms them both down and makes them less intense. He’s a grumpy pants and she’s a fun kid. They do have a great balance. This is a happy song, but it feels a little unusual for a Foxtrot. If anyone can make it work it’s these two. They just float out there. Light and fresh, deceptively simple. Are we fans of her dress? Hmm...

JUDGES: Len Goodman said “What a pretty dance!” The longer this competition goes on, the stronger she gets. He loved the choreography and the performance. Bruno Tonioli said pure, graceful, light and breezy. She’s like a breath of fresh air and has such natural musicality, with her own style. Carrie Ann Inaba thought the beginning was a little simple and weak, but as soon as she got into hold it took Carrie Ann’s breath away. Len argued with her about the beginning — let her make her own points. There’s enough to argue about without getting upset unnecessarily.

SCORES: 9, 10, 9 = 28 out of 30. So Len gives a 10 and the others don’t? More often it’s the other way around.

2. Sean Lowe & Peta Murgatroyd — Tango — They really want to beat Ingo & Kym to get into the Semifinals. Peta said Sean has to show sharp, precise footwork, attack and aggression. She warned him that she was going to say something to piss him off before they started dancing. Just come up with a new relationship rumor about Catherine. He loves that. They have a runaway groom theme for their dance - a fighting couple that run “Hot and Cold.” (Sorry, Catherine?) You can see Sean thinking about his steps through the dance. He never just dances with feeling (like Andy). Poor Peta is dumped in the end!

JUDGES: Bruno said Sean started well but his feet don’t seem to be in the right place at the right time. He lost his footwork. Carrie Ann said last week their Rumba was so sustained and this week he’s back to inconsistency and lost the music again. (Was there an issue with the lights on the floor?) Len said he went for so much attack he lost the quality of movement. His right hand on Peta’s back …didn’t look right.  “It wasn’t a great dance, it was a little bit ugly.” Eek.

SCORES: 7, 7, 7 = 21 out of 30

3. Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff — Viennese Waltz — If Jacoby gets a 10, his mom might run across the floor and give Len a kiss. Hee hee! If Len doesn’t give a 10, his mom might just beat him up. Beautiful, passionate dance. Male celebs have trouble with their arms sometimes - just flailing - but he’s pretty good.

JUDGES: Carrie Ann sang “This is a man’s world!” When he took his shirt off the whole female section behind her went nuts. Carrie Ann said it was absolutely stunning. The VW is about smooth, and all one level, no choppiness. He’s known for aggressiveness and it was nice to see this change. Len asked his mother if she liked it. She said, “I love it, Len!” He said, “So did I! … I was looking, you were cooking. Great footwork!” Bruno said everybody thinks the VW is easy but it has to look simple and effortless. He lost it for a second but he didn’t mind. His mother is such a star in the audience. Total ham! She’s funny but she needs to calm down a bit.

4. Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson — Foxtrot — In rehearsals, Kym felt like Ingo was a little checked out. Physically, he felt sick. He has a limit of how many hours he can do. He seemed to hit a wall. But on the live show he was all smiles, and seemed genuinely glad to be there. Their routine is light and bouncy and fun. “You Make Me Feel So Young.” It’s one of their better dances. He smiled a bit and it was less obvious when he was thinking through the steps.

JUDGES: Len said it had an ease of movement and gliding feel. He could’ve been a bit softer in the arms and stronger in the footwork but all that moaning and groaning and he came out and did well. Bruno said he was a little more Fred Flintstone than Fred Astaire (!) but he put the work in and it worked. Carrie Ann said it was by far his best posture in hold, but what she loved the most is he reminded her of Gene Kelly, because he was so casual and not so stiff.

5. Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough — Viennese Waltz — Carrie Ann wants to see more believable emotion from Kellie. In rehearsals, Kellie talked about how she’d love to spend another minute with her grandmother, who was like her mother. She died when Kellie was 15. She never really got closure. She’s trying to channel that emotion on the dance floor for Carrie Ann. A little too much smoke on the floor. If you talk about emotion and aim to bring it out, that’s usually enough for Carrie Ann, so we’ll see.

JUDGES: Bruno said mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the prettiest of them all? He said she was the queen of the Viennese Waltz. A thing of beauty. Carrie Ann said dance without emotion is just a bunch of steps. Today she went beyond the steps. She saw her taking steps forward in that direction. Len said it was sophisticated and had an effortless ease about it. Ocean of motions, lovely extension. He would’ve liked a few more heels leads, but that’s just nitpicking. Lovely dancing.

6. Alexandra Raisman & Mark Ballas — Argentine Tango — He’s excited for her to have a dramatic dance. This week she has to become a seductress. It feels like he’s always trying to sexify his partners. Is that true, or does he just tend to get sweet, innocent-seeming celebs? Not totally sold on this routine.

JUDGES: Carrie Ann asked how she felt. She said “Good.” The transformation she’s seen is unbelievable. She’s blown away by her growth, but the lifts sometimes had some strange moments. Bruno jumped in to say they were perfect. Len said it had mood and atmosphere. A ballroom Tango is like a guy dancing with his wife. This AT is like a guy dancing with his mistress. It was smooth, seductive and terrific. Bruno said he had no idea she could be so good at being bad. She has this sultry temptress down to a T. She’s become such a good actress. For him, the lifts were perfect. It was sensational.

SCORES: 9, 10, 10 = 29 out of 30. Huh. Feels overscored. Trying to get into this couple but it just isn’t working.

ROUND 2: TRIO CHALLENGE

1.
Zendaya Coleman & Valentin Chmerkovskiy & Gleb Savchenko — Salsa — Z said they made a good team and Gleb got her jokes about Val’s height. He’s not short or anything, but she’s tall and in heels she’s a supermodel. LOVE her outfit for this dance. She looks like she is the lead pro of this dance. So much confidence in her moves, and she’s front and center. Fast and sharp.

JUDGES: Len they said two’s company and three’s a crowd, but not in this case. He loved that Zendaya became the star. Bruno said she didn’t need the underwear models, all attention went to her. (But we love the underwear models!) Carrie Ann said the throne was appropriate ‘cause she’s the queen of the Salsa. She loved the choreography.

SCORES: 10, 10, 10 = 30. FIRST PERFECT SCORE OF THE SEASON!

2.
Sean Lowe & Peta Murgatroyd & Sharna Burgess — Jazz — He’s a magician in the dance and the women are his assistants. He works hard out there, but he’s just not naturally rhythmic, and the women seem to be the stars, doing the bulk of the moves.

JUDGES: Bruno said Sean had plenty of magic with a little bit of tragic. He wishes he didn’t watch Sean’s feet. The girls were incredible, the number was fantastic, but his feet kept getting into a jumble all the time. Carrie Ann said Bruno is right. They were so tight that whenever Sean made a mistake it was really noticeable. It was an ambitious routine and she was proud. Len said it was a bit like his first dance - attack came in and style went out. Poor Sean.

SCORES: 7, 7, 7 = 21 out of 30. Sean said this is hard for anyone, especially someone as Caucasian as him.

3.
Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff & Cheryl Burke — Paso Doble — The Paso is the man’s dance so Cheryl said it’s important that he’s strong and confident. He’s trying to beat everybody, but Kellie has the same dances this week so he’s specifically going for her. Intense routine! Love his funky little floor move in the end. What’s his mom going to say now? And why is he wearing black and yellow? He’s not a Steeler - that was Hines Ward.

JUDGES: Carrie Ann laughed and said Jacoby has such an impressive presence on the floor. When he did the drag, he just kind of tossed Cheryl. She wanted more finesse in the tossing. Len said this isn’t a dance floor, it’s a bull ring. He came out with fantastic presence. He loved the hand swings. “Up until now you’ve just been a pretender, you’ve become a contender tonight.” Bruno said it was strong, powerful, untamed. It was like a Paso Doble by Quentin Tarantino. He has to sort out his Spanish lines, though.

SCORES: 8, 9, 8 = 25 out of 30. Pretty low. Hmm..

4. Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson & Lindsay Arnold — Jive — Because Lindsay’s in the room, he sucks up the pain a little. It’s like they all want to impress the new kid and it brings out the best in them. Why did they dress this handsome man like such a dork? It’s cute (love the glasses!), but not flattering. At least he’s moving around a lot, instead of just letting the girls do the bulk of the work. Still, not the cleanest dance in the world. Very pink, though!

JUDGES: Len said it could’ve been sharper in the feet, but Jive is about effervescence and fun. It was full-on, fun and he liked it. Bruno said Ingo was on a sugar high. His kicks and flicks have to be sharper and tighter. Carrie Ann said when they lost Andy, she thought they’d lose the heart, but Ingo brought it back. Ingo clearly likes the Jive, even if he’s not a technical star with it.

SCORES: 8, 8, 8 = 24

Vote for Ingo & Kym: 1-800-868-3403

5. Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough & Tristan MacManus — Paso Doble — Tristan is bringing them into the darker side of the world? He’s like the sweetest guy of all time! Tristan said trying to get the Paso aggression out of Kelile is like trying to get a lion out of a kitten. Nice intro in front of the mirror. Very creative set-up. The smoke machine is back. Tristan played a dark angel once before, maybe that’s his calling. They have a perfectly intense song. It sounds like an action movie’s big fight sequence. Wow!

JUDGES: Bruno said “That was masterpiece theater.” It had high art and high drama. From angels to demons. So engrossing and entertaining. Carrie Ann did a little dance and ran over to hug Kellie. “That was incredible! You took my breath away.” Bruno went over to hug the men. Everyone wants a piece of this dance. Len said he was expecting more than flashing lights and cracking music. It was a hodepodge of moves. Where’s the twist turns? Where’s the recognizable ... (BOOS!) “I don’t want to see flashing lights, crashing music, I wanted a Paso Doble!” He stood up and yelled as everyone booed. DRAMA! Len yelled something at Bruno like he can’t talk unless he’s standing up and … something gets stuck up his ass. Wow!

SCORES: 10, 7 (WTF?!), 10 = 27 out of 30

Vote for Kellie & Derek: 1-800-868-3401 (1-800-VOTE4-01)

6. Alexandra Raisman & Mark Ballas & Henry Byalikov— Jive — This three make a great team. Mark is the cutest Jiver.

JUDGES: Carrie Ann said she’s loving what she’s seeing this week. It’s consistent. She’s truly confident. She was a little flat-footed and lost the music at the top, but keep doing. Len said Aly really went for it strong. Get more bounce in the balls of your feet, but good job. Bruno said they are right, but she has grown so much as a performer. She’s able to play so many characters, even with a Fosse feel.

SCORES: 9, 9, 9 = 27 out of 30.
