Anyone else nervous about the addition of Contemporary as a first dance on Dancing With the Stars Season 16?

It seems like an advanced dance style — great for So You Think You Can Dance and DWTS finale Freestyles, but not for a Week 1 introductory routine. But no one asked us. Last week, we heard Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson discussing how they got Contemporary as their first dance. But they are not alone in this challenge.

Paparazzi X-Posed posted a brief interview with pro Tristan MacManus, and he said he and Dorothy Hamill were also given Contemporary as their first dance. He was asked how it’s going. “Things are going great,” Tristan said, as he made his way into the rehearsal studio. (Watch the full video if you want to watch Tristan deal with the awkwardness of a photographer suggesting he take his shirt off.)

What do you think? Tristan and Dorothy seem like they have potential to go the distance as a pair, and Contemporary probably won’t hurt them in terms of sending them home — especially since all the couples get two dances before someone is eliminated on Week 2. It’s possible many couples will have to deal with this tricky dance style by Week 2. But it’s so hard to really judge, especially for our panel of judges, since they don’t seem to have Contemporary experience, and it’s going to be interesting to see how viewers react to the style.

First dance news is still trickling in, but Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess revealed they have Foxtrot, and Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff have Cha-Cha-Cha. That’s more normal for Week 1. Do you like DWTS branching out with new Week 1 styles, or does it make you nervous?
