The original Twinkle Toes is back!
Emmitt Smith, now 43, won Dancing With the Stars Season 3 with Cheryl Burke back in 2006. Now he's preparing to dance (with Cheryl or, more likely, another pro) on All-Stars Season 15.
This time he'll be joined by five other champions, plus at least three hungry runners-up and two third-place finalists.
"It is like a family reunion," Emmitt told ESPN. "I'm a little nervous about it. Look at the names on the list. You see a bunch of great performers, some in the entertainment world and some in the sports world. I said, 'Emmitt, you have your work cut out! Did I make the right decision. Lord have mercy!' At the end of the day, I truly feel like I'm part of this big family. It's a great show. People of all generations have a chance to watch and get behind a contestant. I'm thrilled to be a part of it."
Lord have mercy indeed! Emmitt won before and there's no saying he can't do it again. Football players tend to do well and the NFL legend is a likable, self-deprecating guy with the right mix of confidence and humility. For example, ESPN asked him about how he stays in shape with golf. Is he any good?
"If you asked me two weeks ago in Tahoe, I sucked," he answered. "If you asked me last week, I'd say I did pretty good. I shot an 80 on a course I had never seen, and I even had three birdies. I don't play a lot of golf every day. I'm a guy who goes out once a week or every two weeks. It depends on how busy I am. I have a real estate development company and a construction company, speaking engagements, endorsement deals, and let alone my kids' activities. I have five kids. And I realize that I have only 24 hours in a day. I do have to put my head down on a pillow at some point."
He should get his sleep in now, 'cause his pro partner will be revealed on August 13, then he'll find out his final competitor on August 27, training will get intense for a month, and he'll hit the dance floor with the 12 other All-Stars on the September 24 premiere.
Are you rooting for Emmitt? Who do you think he should be paired with — Cheryl again or someone else?
