You would never know it based on his sunny disposition, but Dancing With the Stars pro Derek Hough is attached to helping friends and family members of people who have committed suicide because he has personal experience with it.

As Derek told E! at an event for The Trevor Project (a suicide prevention hotline), “It’s very important to me … I had a suicide in the family a long time ago when I was 15 years old.” He continued to refer to the incident, saying, “It was intense … He left a daughter behind to take care of and we helped raise.”

That’s one of the big reasons why Derek's heart goes out to teenagers who have either attempted suicide, or who were close to someone who took their own life. As he put it, “It's a sad, sad thing for anybody to feel that alone that they can't turn to anyone.”

Fortunately, famous spokespeople like Derek can have a seriously positive effect. We’re happy to see Derek taking a traumatic childhood event and turning it into something good by helping others. Yet another reason to love him!
