A short-term weight loss can have long-term consequences for your body. Dancing With the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff talked to OK! Magazine about the extreme dieting she's done in the past to slim down for professional ballroom competitions.

"I think for a while I had a certain degree of anorexia because I wouldn’t eat anything, I would just drink water and put detoxifying products into it so it would clean out my body," Karina told OK!

She realized she had to change "when I didn’t eat for two weeks and after that I was so nervous because I was about to do a competition and I had no energy and my body started reacting in a way that I hadn’t experienced before."

She said she started having spasms, and it was a wake-up call that what she was doing wasn't healthy. Even though she didn’t suffer from "full on anorexia or bulimia" she's still paying for her earlier choices today. The 34-year-old DWTS Season 13 champion said she now tries to eat as healthy as she can — because if she doesn't, her digestion and metabolism don't work as well. "So I always try to come up with supplements or something to help my body get back to the best possible condition."

Always listen to your body! It's good that Karina learned healthier eating habits — and brava to her for sharing her story so maybe someone else considering such extreme measures will realize the short and long-term effects for your system. You're gonna need your body for a long, long time. Treat it right!
