Dancing With the Stars is a sequin-filled minefield.
Each week the celeb dancers and their pro partners tax their bodies with new moves they must learn quickly in a punishing and relentless schedule. Injuries are common. By Season 13, Week 4, every couple had some bangs and bruises and several dancers had already received medical attention. Here’s the major injury roundup so far:
Ricki Lake: Ricki had the first injury of the season, tweeting a photo of her bruised leg. At first it seemed to be a twisted ankle, but it turned out that she cut her heel into her shin. Supposedly a medic showed up to take her to the hospital, but she didn't need it. Overkill? Maybe the doctors just wanted to time themselves getting to the studios, since injuries happen so often on this show.
Elisabetta Canalis: Elisabetta dislocated her shoulder while practicing with Val Chmerkovskiy but, strangely enough, she wasn’t phased. "It happens all the time," Elisabetta said on Ellen. "Since I was a little kid." When her shoulder pops out, she just pops it back in. Sadly Elisabetta's shoulder trick couldn't save her from elimination on Week 2.
Derek Hough: Speaking of popping shoulders, the same thing happen to Derek before the Week 4 Results Show. Derek dislocated his shoulder, telling On the Red Carpet, "it popped in and out." But he still continued to dance on Tuesday night because it was so important to him to dance with his sister, Julianne Hough, for her big return to the ballroom.
Chaz Bono: Chaz started having knee and ankle problems right away and pain still seems to be a big issue for him. His partner, Lacey Schwimmer, had her physical therapist drive in to give him some treatment and Chaz's mom, Cher, also sent her doctors to help. After the Week 4 Results Show, Lacey and Chaz reeled off their list of pain remedies. "Ice, Aleve, massage, a little physical therapy, acupuncture," Chaz said. Lacey went into great detail about the things they’ve tried, including something called "cupping."
Tony Dovolani: Tony limped into the Celebriquarium after his Week 4 Tango with celeb partner Chynna Phillips because he was still injured from the sprained ankle he suffered during dress rehearsals Monday night. According to TV Guide, Tony's ankle twisted on the floor after the crew did a test run of the dreaded smoke machine. "The fog sometimes leaves a little oil slick in its wake," said one staffer. "It can really be slippery." That thing is the real Psycho killer! It wasn’t Tony’s first big injury of the season, either. The week before, Tony hurt his shoulder and his best friend Maksim Chmerkovskiy drove him to the hospital, while they were attacked by paparazzi.
