Dancing With the Stars Season 14 is coming to a close tonight, and we're on the edge of our seats waiting to find out if Donald Driver, William Levy, or Katherine Jenkins will take home the Mirror Ball.
Wetpaint Entertainment got a chance to chat with pro troupe member Sharna Burgess today about what she thinks of the final three, who she think will win, and why Katherine is at a disadvantage despite her technical prowess.
Wetpaint Entertainment: How are preparations going for the finale results show?
Sharna Burgess: Really well. It was such an epic night last night. Everyone was amazing. The dancers were amazing. It was such an emotional rollercoaster sitting backstage watching everyone, because you become invested with what's going on with them because you've just spent the last three months with them, really. It's been incredible. Today, I have no idea what's going to happen, but it's going to be a jam-packed show with a lot going on between opening numbers — we've got Kelly Clarkson performing — and a few of the celebrities coming back to dance for us all again, so there's definitely a lot going on today.
What you going to be doing?
Me, today, I'm going to be doing the opening number which is choreographed by Jamal Simms. I'll also be dancing with Kelly Clarkson. She'll be performing two of her songs. And l'll also be doing a number with Gavin [DeGraw] and Karina Smirnoff], bringing back one of their favorites, and we've added some of the troupe girls to it to give it a little bit more oomph. It's really cute.
Who do you think had the best Freestyle last night?
If I went on technical ability, I would say Katherine Jenkins. I think she is a superstar. But if I went on entertainment factor, what got me leaping out of my seat, I would have to say Donald Driver. I thought him coming out in that cowboy hat was so fun. They had some really great tricks in there. I mean the man just has brute strength. They had some wonderful stuff. But Katherine Jenkins had some really fast footwork. It was just — she really kept up with it. And the transitions in and out of lifts, it was just so fast, and she nailed it. She did such a fantastic job. So for me it’s so difficult to pick between those two.
Donald really was just so fun
I kinda wanted to get up there and do it with him. It’s that kind of infectious fun dance, and the song is a great song. I love that they brought the artist in signing it up behind him. It was just done really well. Hard to chose. I’m nervous for today because I love all three of them. They’re adorable people. I want them all to win!
Who do you think will win, if you had to pick?
I don’t know. William Levy has every woman on this planet falling to their knees. Donald Driver's improvement level on this show is out of the world, he just does an amazing job, and they have a huge fanbase. And Katherine Jenkins is, for me, the best technical dancer. I would like to see Katherine win for that reason, but I have a little feeling that it may go to one of the boys. Just a little feeling because I think they have the biggest fan bases and everyone is equally amazing.
Katherine does seem to be at a disadvantage because she's less well known in the states
It certainly is difficult for a Welsh opera singer — who is absolutely incredible — but she doesn’t have the fan base here of say the football star. And I mean William Levy — like I said, he has every women on the planet.
He just has to take off his shirt!
Exactly. He’s so humble. Bless him, he’s adorable. But it is difficult for [Katherine]. So it’s a true testament to Mark and her dancing that she’s made it this far in the competition because it is about votes, and so she has been kept in for that reason. So who knows, she might be able to take that Mirror Ball based on pure talent.
There are plenty of fans who vote based on dance skill first.
The Dancing With the Stars audience is a lot more educated now. Dancing, through this show, has been bought to the public and some people have gone out and taken a lesson. People understand the difference between a Quickstep and a Foxtrot and even agree or disagree with the judges based on some sort of technical knowledge. It’s not just people watching this show anymore who don’t know anything about dance. So that could absolutely work in her favor. It’s gonna be a very very interesting call. I’ll be on the edge of my seat biting my nails, and I don’t know how I’m going to react to any option. I don’t know what I want to happen so I’m not sure — do I get excited, do I get sad? I don’t know!
What’s the mood like backstage right now?
It’s nervous. It’s tense. There’s also a little of relief, like, there is just that last little bit left. It’s definitely — they still have to dance today, they have the 24-hour dance that they’ve got to pull out. They only got the music last night so that is an added stress. They had to go into the study and rehearse last night. They’ve definitely got a big day. I think in a way that doesn't give them time to think about it too much, which is great, but I have a feeling that after tonight they’re all going to be so exhausted and need to take a big big vacation.
