Seven years ago, Canadian singer Beverley Staunton was feeling stuck. She had just moved to Studio City, CA, and finished a tour as a back-up vocalist for Nelly Furtado. But she felt like she had hit the end of her opportunities. Then, a year after her move, she was hired as a singer for a brand new show called Dancing With the Stars, which was debuting in the summer of 2005. Six years later,  Beverly is still singing in the homes of millions of Americans, and is gearing up for the start of DWTS Season 13 on Sept. 19.

“She’s better than many singers selling millions of records,” DWTS musical director Harold Wheeler told the Thousand Oaks Acorn. Harold added that he’s never in his 50-year career seen as versatile a performer as Beverly.

To date, Beverley has performed backup vocals on recordings with Bette Midler, Michael Buble, Julio Iglesias, Jessica Simpson, Barry Manilow, and Jackie Evancho. She’s also sung on stage with Kelly Clarkson, Lionel Ritchie, Martina McBride, Dionne Warwick, and James Taylor.

Although Beverley told the Thousand Oaks newspaper she feels “a ton of pressure” to be perfect on the live show, even she makes mistakes. Harold described one time Beverley missed her entrance in a song: “It was the third song of the evening. We had nine more songs and I said, get over it. Make this one mistake, but never make it again. Every singer has made one mistake.” And the DWTS dancers and hosts make plenty of mistakes themselves — that’s just the nature of live TV.

Beverly, now married with two children in Newbury Park, CA, released a country/pop album called Everything Changes in December. What are her plans, beyond DWTS? “I would like to see some form of success with my album in the next couple of years, and I’m trying to enjoy my kids while they’re so young.”
