Not every celeb is the right fit for Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy, but Gilles Marini wouldn’t mind taking him for a ballroom spin. (First same-sex couple, DWTS?)

Maks was well known for his tough-love ways long before Hope Solo wrote what she wrote about her Season 13 partner. Gilles — who is competing on All-Stars Season 15 with Peta Murgatroyd, aka Maks’s girlfriend — talked to Celebuzz about Maks’s teaching style.

“I think this is what it is, and hopefully no one takes it wrong, his way is hard,” Gilles said. “We all know about it. If a lady doesn’t like to be treated in a hard way on the dance floor with Maks, then they should tell the producer, ‘I don’t want to get in on this ride. Because I’m scared.’”

A lot of ladies like the bad boy, Gilles said, but they have to know what they are signing up for. “When you start ballroom dancing, next thing you know, you end with someone like Maks, you have to be aware it’s a hard ride. That’s the way he teaches. If Maks is teaching me tomorrow, I want him to be super hard on me. Otherwise, I won’t learn.”

Back on Season 8, Gilles made it to second place with Cheryl Burke, who is known to be super hard herself, just in a much smaller package than Maks. For some celebs to do well, they need someone tough like Maks. Other celebs need someone with a softer approach, like Mark Ballas.

The DWTS Powers That Be can guess who will be a good fit with whom, but it’s hard to really know for sure until they get in the rehearsal studio. This season, Kirstie Alley is dancing with Maks and wouldn’t have it any other way, whereas Bristol Palin is happy to be back with Mark. To each their own!

Dancing With the Stars Season 15: All-Stars will premiere on Monday, September 24 at 8p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Check out the full All-Stars cast list here.
