While competing on Dancing With the Stars All-Stars, Kirstie Alley is also promoting her new memoir, The Art of Men. She’s already shared stories about John Travolta and Patrick Swayze and she also talked to Entertainment Tonight about kicking her addiction to cocaine.

Kirstie started doing coke after the shame of cheating on her first husband, her high school sweetheart, Bob Alley. Her cocaine addiction kept increasing, and she told ET, "I thought I was going to overdose almost every time." In her book, she wrote, "I did enough cocaine to kill several people." Why did she keep doing it? "I kept going for that feeling of being extroverted and that would last for 60 seconds," Kirstie told ET. "And then I was going to die for 30 minutes, and then the second I wasn't going to die — boom, I'd do it again." She felt her soul was dying, even more than her body.

One of her friends sent her L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics. She started reading the book — while still snorting cocaine. Then she read the parts about why people have compulsions. "Somehow I got through it, and I thought this is either the world's biggest scam or this is going to be how I get rid of this hideous compulsion." She credits Scientology with helping her, because one of its components is about taking personal responsibility. “You are responsible for how well your life goes,” Kirstie said.

Now her life is going pretty well. She has a new TV Land show called Giant Baby, in addition to still competing on DWTS All-Stars. And she’s paying off some of her old bad karma with good deeds like trying to help people in the New York and New Jersey area who were hurt by Hurricane Sandy. Hopefully, after she’s done promoting this book, she’ll just keep moving forward with more positive stories.
