UPDATE: Some clarification is finally in on the "end of next year" part! Maks' rep told Access Hollywood he would compete in two more seasons after All-Stars, so that does mean he's finished at the end of 2013.
Mr. Sex on a Stick is ready to take a bow and leave the ballroom behind.
Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy has talked about leaving the show several times, hinting that he’s about ready to move on. Early Friday morning he tweeted a link to a New York Post story that gave details on his solid plan to leave DWTS — although he'll still compete on Season 15 All-Stars, which premieres Monday on ABC — and start working on the next phase of his career.
“With nothing but love, gratitude and respect to all that played a part in that amazing aspect of my life,” Maks tweeted, linking to a story called "Mad Maks quits." The story says Maks will not return to DWTS after his current contract expires at the end of next year. “What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?” he told The Post. “It makes total sense. The audience can’t expect for me to want to stick around, and the producers can’t expect for me to want to stick around.”
Maks' next project will be filming the lead role in a movie, a romantic comedy in which he'll play a Latin dancer “who is a bit of a hustler,” Maks said. “The [female lead] is faced with the choice between somebody really attractive and appealing and somebody who looks like a lifelong partner." He starts filming in January.
But filming a movie in January wouldn't necessarily mean he couldn't do DWTS Season 16 next spring. Although it sounds like Maks is leaving for good after dancing All-Stars with Kirstie Alley, the wording of the story is confusing because it says he's leaving after his contract expires "at the end of next year." Isn't that the end of 2013, or did they mean "season," like he's done after the new Season 15? (Update: Sounds like it's truly end of 2013, which means through Seasons 16 and 17...)
How do you feel about Maks leaving the show? Good news? Bad news? It may be good news for a member of the pro troupe, if they get bumped up to competitive duty, especially since three-time DWTS champ Derek Hough has hinted tht All-Stars will be his last season, calling it his "swan song." But Maks is Maks and it would be impossible for the show to really replace "The Bad Boy of the Ballroom."
