Thanks to his smooth dance moves and cheerful attitude, Roshon Fegan caught our eye on Day One on Dancing With the Stars Season 14. He hasn't always earned the judges' love, but we've enjoyed watching him grow as a ballroom dancer, and he and pro partner Chelsie Hightower are one of the most entertaining couples of the season.

Wetpaint Entertainment recently had a chance to chat with Roshon, and he opened up about his DWTS experience, the judge's scores, and what's next for him after the show.

Wetpaint Entertainment: You're prepping for two individual dances this week. How is that going?
Roshon: It's a lot of work. We're putting a lot of work in. Hopefully it pays off.

You participated in, and survived, the Dance Duel twice. What was it like to perform in them?
It was pretty extreme. It's a really weird situation. Having to go against a really good friend of mine, Jaleel [White], it was a crazy thing. The Dance Duel is never a fun thing, and it's never fun to go up against someone you like. I'm glad I made it through, but I'm glad they're over, too.

Are you glad the Dance Duels were included this season?
I don't know. In a way I was glad. It did give me two opportunities to stay in the game. But at the same time I think it would have been cool to have been without it. It wouldn't have been such hard work.

How has the Dancing With the Stars experience compared to your expectations going in?
Dancing With the Stars is a great show. I already knew it was going to be a lot of work, but I didn't know it was going to be so life consuming. It does take up this whole two, three months of your life, and you have to dedicate all you've got to it. It is a quite interesting experience, let's just say that.

You have a lot of past dance experience, especially with your Disney Channel show Shake It Up! How does DWTS compare to your past experiences?
Well obviously it's a whole other level of production. It's a whole other demographic I'm working for here. It's a big show. It definitely is a huge project. I've never done reality before. This is something very different for me.

How has your past dance experience influenced or helped your DWTS performances?
Well, it doesn't, really, it doesn't do anything. It is what it is. I have to learn new dances and I can't do anything that I really want to do in there, because it's against the rules. It helps to keep me on tempo, and it's good that I know how to move and I'm flexible enough to do the dance moves, but in reality it's really no advantage at a certain point. It gives me some confidence that I know how to stay on beat and things like that, but when it comes to the frame and all that in ballroom, it doesn't really add up.

You seem to love working with Chelsie Hightower. Why is she such a good match for you?
She's young, she's entertaining, she really knows how to connect with me and she can keep up with me, that's good. Obviously she's a really great dancer, so it's all that good stuff.

You guys seem to have a lot of fun together.
Yeah, we do.

If you had to chose one other pro to be with, not Chelsie, who would you pick?
Mmmm … I don't really know. That's a hard one! I don't know.

So, there has been some controversy about the judges scores this season. What have you thought of their scoring?
You know, the judges scores are what they are. I just sort of take them and put them in to the next dance and make sure I hit the points they want me to hit. They're the judges, so you have to listen to them. I definitely wanted better scores than I've gotten in the past weeks, but you can't always get what you want and you've got to work for it, so that's what I'm here to do.

Do you and Chelsie have any new strategies to improve your scores going forward?
No, not really. Just keeping it going, keeping working hard, just listening to their comments and making sure that we don't do what they say "don't do."

Who do you think is your biggest competition?
I think obviously Katherine Jenkins, because she's leading. She's definitely everybody's competition at this point.

Who do you think will make the final three?
Oh man, I have no idea. I just hope it's me. I have no clue who's going to be there. Katherine's doing great, so it looks like she's headed there. But everyone else, I don't really know.

Have you and Chelsie thought about what you'd like to do for the freestyle if you make the top three?
Well we've been thinking about it, but haven't been working on it yet. We're not sure yet, but we know it's going to be crazy if we make it.

It seems like that would be a place where you would shine.
That would definitely be a great moment. I would love that.

Many stars on the show talk about the way it changes their body, especially with weight loss. Have you noticed any differences?
I didn't have much weight to lose, so I can't really tell the difference! But obviously I feel more fit and I'm a little more cut. I'm doing a lot of work. I'm more hungry than usual, and that kind of stuff usually happens when you're working really hard.

What's the hardest part of being on the show?
Just learning these dances within a small amount of time. A week. It's crazy — it's crazy trying to get it down in a week.  But that's what we've got to do.

What's your favorite backstage memory?
Every memory is a good memory. I don't really remember anything else! I think every time you're backstage you get to be with the whole cast and everyone just laughs and it's great. It's great to be a part of it.

Is there any chance we'll get to see you shirtless?
If that happens then you all just have to wait for the special moment. If y'all want to see that you have to keep me on the show!

You recently produced your first EP. What can we expect from you musically going forward?
This summer I'm really excited about touring around and meeting a lot of my fans out there. I'm dropping some free music, definitely, for my fans. Since I write and produce all my own stuff, it's just going to be a lot happening this summer.

Any other projects you're looking forward to post-DWTS?
Shake It Up! Season 3 is coming up. I have a lot of good stuff cracking. It's gonna be good.
