On Dancing With the Stars, the judges can say what they want — they’re only half the battle. We have our own favorite routines each week. On Season 13, Week 1, we went for entertainment value alone. For Week 2, we’re going with the best overall dance. The judges were just too cranky to recognize it.

J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff, Jive

Look, we’re not going to pretend we’re experts on the Jive or the Lindy Hop (which sounds like a really cool Easter candy). But pro dance Louis Van Amstel knows his dance styles and in his Week 2 blog he said it all:

“J.R. did such a natural jive, as if he has done it for years. I also love the fact that he enjoys himself so much. He’s great at both ballroom and Latin. He’s the one to watch out for. The only Lindy Hop I saw in the dance were the Lindy kicks on stage and toward the end, which many world class competitors have in their jive routines. So Len, why are you calling them out on it? It was maybe 10 seconds of the whole routine! Oh, and Lindy Hop is part of the heritage of jive.”

Louis said he would’ve given them three 8s. Agreed. A score of 24 would’ve been more fair than the 22 they got and it would’ve put them at the top of the leaderboard. This dance was so fast, fun, ambitious and just plain good, it seemed like a lock for the top spot. So we’re putting it there retroactively.
