Well, we were close. In our Dancing With the Stars Season 14 pre-show predictions, posted before we even saw the first rehearsals, we had Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani as the second couple to leave, after Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya. (Sorry, Team Wagannbuns! Glad to be wrong!)
Since Tony The Teeth is one of our favorite pros, we really didn't want to put him so close to the bottom again, after he left too soon with Chynna Phillips on Season 13. But, once again, Tony was paired with an amazing icon who happened to also be a somewhat insecure "older" celeb with a relatively small online fan base. And, unlike Chynna, Martina didn't have natural dance ability. She was "careful" as head judge Len Goodman kept putting it. Her first dance, a Foxtrot, got a score of 20, which was tied for the lowest of the night but still a pretty good Week 1 score. However, on Week 2, Martina lost her steps during her Jive and ended up with a very low score of 17. As Bruno Tonioli noted, Martina's serve went into the net. All of a sudden a close horse race became a bit less close.
Martina didn’t seem surprised to be leaving first. "It was an amazing experience," the smiling and gracious tennis pro said after being eliminated. "Again, I just wish that it had lasted longer. I gave it everything I had but I blew it yesterday and it cost me, unfortunately." She’s looking forward to coming back on the final week to do her Jive again, and hopefully get all her steps perfectly!
Tony, on the other hand, was hoping the fans would come to their rescue. "I'm devastated right now because I wanted America to get to know Martina like I do,” Tony told On the Red Carpet. I wanted this really badly for her. So I'm shocked, actually, probably the first time ever in 13 seasons that I'm surprised. I did not expect this. I thought the audience would really stand behind us."
