Wow. Host Tom Bergeron said it best: "Week 6 sucks!"
That’s the week Sabrina Bryan went home on Dancing With the Stars Season 5. And she wasn’t even top of the leaderboard that week. She was tops on DWTS All-Stars Week 6, but it didn’t help her. She wasn’t just the top-scoring celeb, combining scores from last week, but she had a perfect score on Monday (October 29)! Her beautiful Rumba got the first 30 of the season.
We were already floored when, one by one, the entire bottom of the Dancing With the Stars All-Stars Week 6 leaderboard was declared safe. We thought we were being overly cautious to be afraid for Gilles Marini — as well as the couples who scored below him — when the truth was we should’ve been looking even higher on the scoreboard.
This was a funky week in general, because it combined two weeks of scores and two weeks of voting, with one week being affected by Hurricane Sandy. And we know it must’ve been affected in a major way because Tom said they decided not to eliminate a couple on next Monday’s Week 7 Performance Show because so many people had trouble voting Monday night. Did the hurricane voting affect Sabrina? Maybe, but maybe she just never had as many fans as the others.
She was voted into the season as the 13th contestant, but she was also a surprise addition to the bottom two a couple of weeks ago. Maybe this week she looked so obviously safe that fans felt free to focus on others. Sure, she had the highest scores — way over Kelly Monaco at the bottom of the leaderboard — but perhaps the percentages were so close that it was deceptive.
At the end of Tuesday’s Week 6: Results show, the two couples who got perfect scores this week were left under the red light — Sabrina and Louis van Amstel, and Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff. Tom noted that they were “not necessarily the bottom two” couples, so we assumed Sabrina was safe and they were just going for drama to put her in the bottom two. Nope!
Of course, the second after Sabrina and Louis’ names were called, Brooke Burke-Charvet asked Sabrina how hurt she felt. Classy and composed to the end, Sabrina answered, "Every single person can understand what it feels like to get a second chance at something, and this was my second chance. Last night was one of the most beautiful nights I've ever had. Louis, I'm so grateful for you. I'm so grateful for this experience. Dancing With the Stars has just been an absolute dream."
Louis said, "I think last night summed up how I feel about Sabrina — that Rumba, how much she opened up to America. For me it was a dream come true. I had it once before on Season 9 with Kelly Osbourne and this lived up [to it]. I love you, I love you, but unfortunately our journey finishes here."
So, so sad. This certainly changes things, in terms of opening up a spot toward the top of the judges’ leaderboard. Are you sorry to see Sabrina and Louis go? Did you vote for them to stay?
