Full Name: Louis van Amstel
Dance Style: Latin
Louis van Amstel began his dance career at an early age, training in a theatre school and gaining a solid background in ballet, tap, and jazz. Upon graduating, Louis attended the University of the Arts in Amsterdam to further strengthen his skills in the classical dances and theory.
Upon immigrating to the United States, Louis quickly became the U.S. National Latin Champion in 2000 and founded the company VanDance, LLC. Through VanDance Louis directed, choreographed and performed in Latin Fusion, a feature production on Broadway.
In his competitive dancing career, he has won several titles, including: 7-time Dutch National Amateur Champion, World Amateur Latin Champion ('94, '95), World Professional Showdance Champion ('96), Professional World Latin Finalist ('96) and U.S. National Latin Champion (2000).
He's the Dutch gentleman that managed to turn wildchild Kelly Osbourne into a lady. Louis has been with DWTS since it's inception when he was paired with reality star Trista Rehn in Season 1. He then went on to dance with partners Lisa Rinna (Season 2) and Monique Coleman (Season 3). Sadly, Louis had to bow out of Season 4 because all the female celebrities were taller than him (FYI: Louis stands at a "diminutive" 5'7)! Nonetheless he maintained a role as performer and choreographer for the next two seasons before returning with partner Priscilla Presley. Louis has another shot at the mirrorball trophy this season with partner Niecy Nash.
Louis has used his incredible talents in many fields, such as choreographing for the theatre, appearances on TV shows, and serving as creative director, choreographer, and dancer in the touring Dancing With The Stars show. He also choreographed for Sabrina Bryan in The Cheetah Girls World Tour. He conducts physical fitness through dance classes and has released several videos on ballroom dance instruction.
In 2009, Louis took his talents to another successful television show, So You Think You Can Dance, where he has been a guest choreographer. His dances recieved rave reviews by the judges. Additionally, van Amstel has appeared on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and All My Children.
