The Walking Dead Creator: Daryl Dixon’s Fans Will Get Him Killed
Our fearless leader has a death wish!
Robert Kirkman, who wrote The Walking Dead comic books and executive produces the TV show, wants fans to remember that no one is safe. He’s not afraid to kill his babies and he doesn’t care if you cry. He’s said before that Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) could die at almost any point, and he’s not letting Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) off the hook either, even if Daryl’s fans are notoriously … let’s call it protective … and have literally threatened to riot if Daryl dies.
Kirkman talked to reporters about character deaths after TWD’s Comic-Con panel.
“I get a lot of hate mail every time I kill anybody in the comic, which always aggravates me because it’s like, ‘It’s been a hundred issues! Don’t you know how this is by now? What are you doing?’” Kirkman told ComicBook.com. “But specifically about the Daryl thing — that fan reaction is going to get him killed. I feel like it’s a dare. Like, ‘Oh, really? You’re gonna riot? We’ll see … we’ll see. No one is safe.” Hmm. New showrunner Scott Gimple added, “We may be unsafe afterwards, I mean physically.” Seriously.
Norman Reedus seems to realize Daryl is not immune. He previously told AMC, "I think we all have that fear. Nobody's safe in this world — on our show, as well as our group. Everyone is a moving target. I don't think anyone thinks they're going to be on for a certain amount of episodes. They think they could go at any time, and the producers have made that clear. We are all afraid."
That said, Kirkman is such a spoiler-phobe, when he started saying Rick could die at any point it was the biggest piece of evidence to show that Rick will not be dying anytime soon, and now we can say the same for Daryl. It would be kind of interesting to see what happened to the show without Daryl, but we’re guessing it will only happen if Norman decides to quit. And who would want to quit this show?
