David Alpay’s Canadian Drama Picked Up on Lifetime Canada

Been missing your Professor Shane fix? Well former Vampire Diaries star David Alpay will be back on the airwaves soon enough. His new show, The Lottery, has been picked up by Lifetime Canada — and it sounds seriously intriguing. What is the “conspiracy thriller” about?

According to Our Windsor, The Lottery is a 10-episode series set in a future when women have stopped having kids and the human race is on the brink of extinction. If that sounds like the set-up Children of Men, it’s because the writer of The Lottery, Timothy J. Sexton, also penned the 2007 Alfonso Cuaron film. (Though, the film was loosely adapted from the 1992 P.D. James novel of the same name.)

While Children of Men followed a man trying to transport a pregnant refugee to safety, The Lottery will take a slightly different take on a similar theme: when 100 embryos are successfully fertilized, the government holds a lottery to choose surrogate mothers. Drama and the exploration of what is private and what is public when it comes to the familial sphere ensues! Intriguing, right?

In addition to our guy David, the show will also star: Marley Shelton (Eleventh Hour), Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story), and Martin Donovan (Homeland). No word on if the series will be broadcast in America, but presumably -- if the show does well in the ratings -- it will make the jump to the American TV market.

What do you think of the premise of The Lottery? Are you as happy as we are to hear that David Alpay has a new gig? Sound off in the comments below!

Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, April 17 at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
