Having an ex right a personal essay about your troubled relationship pretty much sounds like a nightmare. Unfortunately for Demi Lovato, this particular nightmare came true with ex-boyfriend and fellow celebrity Joe Jonas writing a tell-all personal essay that exposes the less than positive side of their short-lived time as a couple.

Joe says he didn’t want to be like Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt from The Hills and so to keep his relationships semi-normal, he kept them quiet. “That’s how I ended up dating a lot of people in the business, because you relate to them, you’re on the same schedule, and honestly, it was exciting,” he says. “In the back of my mind, it felt special to date someone who was also famous.”

That includes fellow Disney star Demi. The two co-starred together in the Camp Rock films and Dems frequently performed with the Jonas Brothers. Joe says their relationship “meant a lot to fans” and eventually led to the two dating for a month.

“I really got to know her and got to see the ins and outs of what she was struggling with, like drug abuse,” he says. “I felt like I needed to take care of her, but at the same time I was living a lie, because I wasn’t happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her, because she needed help. I couldn’t express any of that, of course, because I had a brand to protect.”

Eventually things came to a head with Demi “punching a girl in the face on a plane” and heading off to rehab. “I remember being in South America, and fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that we kicked her off the 2010 tour, and they just hated on us for it,” he says.

Joe also hints at another Disney star he would “sneak out and hook up” with “in her car. When rumors began circulating the two were an item, Joe was terrified. “I kept thinking, Oh my God, there’s going to be video, there’s going to be photos,” he recalls. “The girl was also in the business, and we thought we were screwed because we were both working with Disney. It would have been the worst thing we could think of happening to us. But nothing ever came out!”

Well, you know until now with many a fan wondering who this mystery Disney hookup might have been. As for Dems, she’s yet to publicly comment on her ex’s recent writing but Joe assures readers he’s not looking “to disparage anyone I was in a relationship with.”

Let’s hope Demi agrees.
