Demi Lovato said she was cool with Joe Jonas’s recent tell-all essay for Vulture (and its print sibling, New York Magazine) about the perils of growing up Disney, like getting stoned with Miley Cyrus. But at a recent red carpet event, Demi did have a few (small) barbs for her Camp Rock costar and former beau.

“Well, first I was like, ‘Umm, we need to talk,’” Demi tells E! reporters of her initial response. While she says they’re cool now, she did issue a couple warnings. First off? A little tact goes a long way. “I was like, ‘Look I’m not mad at you, but you need to choose your words more carefully next time.’”

In his essay, Joe talked pretty candidly about Demi’s issues with substance abuse, and we have to say, some of the things he said made us sit up and say, “Whoa.” Like, “I wasn’t happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her, because she needed help.” If one of our exes wrote stuff like that in a widely circulated mag, you can bet he’d get some angry texts.

Aside from advising her longtime friend to be choosier with his turns of phrase, Dems fired one more warning shot: “I also said beware because I’m writing my tell-all now.” The 21-year-old “Neon Lights” singer recently released her first book — a daily devotional called “Staying Strong” — and says she hopes to have her second, a memoir, out some time next year, or “whenever it’s done!”

You better watch your back, Joe.
