Demi Lovato recently said she made the decision to be “100 percent honest” about the struggles that led to her 2010 trip to rehab. You know what? She wasn’t kidding about that.
In an incredibly candid interview with Access Hollywood, Demi opens up about her past drug use. “Something I’ve never talked about before, but with my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs. I couldn’t go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes,” the pop star says.
Demi says she had figured out how to smuggle the drug everywhere she went. “I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me,” she says. “I was able to hide it from them as well.”
So what made Demi want to leave her hard-partying lifestyle behind? “I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, ‘Oh my God ... that is alcoholic behavior,’" she says.
She realized she was doing it alone, and that she’d become dependent. “[It’s] no longer, I’m young and rebellious and out having fun, it was, ‘Wow, I’m one of those people ... I gotta get my s—t together.’”
Demi left rehab in 2011, and she’s been dedicated to her recovery since then. Between staying in a sober living house and attending group support meetings, the now 21-year-old seems determined to make sure she can conquer her addiction for good. To say her strength is impressive would be an understatement. A huge one. Bravo, Demi.
