Demi Lovato looked awesome when she took the stage at Logo TV’s “Trailblazers” special, but she wasn’t just there to show off her fabulous purple hair and fishnet dress. Nope, Demi was there for a much more important purpose: To honor her grandfather and the LGBT community all at the same time.
Fighting for LGBT right has always been important to Demi, but this time, she chose to explain why the fight is so personal to her. At the event, Demi revealed something she’s never talked about before — the fact that her late grandfather was gay, and at a time when coming out was even more difficult than it is now.
“I’ve never spoken about this before, but my grandfather himself was a trailblazer,” Demi said. “He was brave enough to come out in the 1960s, and I feel a lot of my spirit has come from him. He passed away a few years later and I only wish he could have been able to see all the progress that has been made.”
But what is “Trailblazers”? It’s an award show in partnership with the Trevor Project honoring people in Hollywood and in their communities who have fought for LGBT rights, held on the one year anniversary of DOMA being struck down. It’s the first award show of its kind, and it’s definitely going to be a positive thing.
“Trailblazers” airs June 26 on Logo TV at 9 pm ET — are you planning to watch?
