Nicki Minaj Denies Throwing Shade at Iggy Azalea: “The Media Puts Words in My Mouth”

When Nicki Minaj emphasized that she writes her own lyrics at the 2014 BET Awards, just about everyone assumed it was a dig at fellow nominee Iggy Azalea, who is rumored to use ghostwriters.

Now Nicki is refuting the speculation on Twitter, saying that she simply wanted to empower other female creatives.

"The media puts words in my mouth all the time, and this is no different," she writes. "I will always take a stance on women writing [because] I believe in us! I believe we're smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do. I've been saying this for five years.

The 31-year-old "Pills N Potions" singer then shares which female MCs she idolized — like Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott.

She continues: "Women must aspire for more. I've congratulated Iggy on the success of 'Fancy,' publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should be proud. That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up-and-coming females to do that."

That's all very noble, but bear in mind that Nicki also pantomimed sipping tea after her comment right after the supposed diss — and then did a little "no shade" dance. Consider us skeptical.

What do you believe? Do you believe Nicki's claim that she was only trying to encourage others? Or do you think she's trying to cover up her shade?
