Derek Hough Apologizes For Maks Chmerkovskiy Diss: I Used to Be “Outrageous!” (VIDEO)

The Derek Hough vs. Maksim Chmerkovskiy "rivalry" has been played up by Dancing With the Stars fans for seasons, though it's unclear how much the pros themselves really buy into it. Still, Derek unintentionally added fuel to his fire by apparently calling Maks insecure while promoting his new book, Taking the Lead: Lessons From a Life in Motion. Derek has insisted that his words were taken out of context, and in a new interview with HuffPost Live, he explained what he really meant.

"When I read that I felt terrible, because it did come across like I was calling someone out," Derek admitted. "I have nothing but love for Maks. What I was commenting about was his experience on [Season 18]. For me, knowing him, and as a friend, I know who he is, he's a great guy... So when I saw it come across, that real side of him, it made me happy. It was one of my favorite parts of the season."

It's definitely true that Season 18 showed a new, softer side of Maks. And it's also true that Maks himself admitted to some insecurities on camera during the season; part of what made his relationship with Meryl Davis so special is that she was able to help him through that. So we get why Derke might have used the word "insecure" without meaning something bad.

"When I continued on in that paragraph, I was actually reflecting on my own experiences," Derek added. "About me being frustrated in earlier seasons."
