Dancing With the Stars Season Season 17: Derek Hough Teases “Jam-Packed” New Show Night — Exclusive
Dancing With the Stars fans have lots to look forward to when the show returns to ABC this fall for Season 17. While the new cast has yet to be announced, Wetpaint Entertainment was able to snag some scoop from dance pro Derek Hough on what to expect with the show's new format.
We caught up with the blond-haired hottie at the Sears Shop Your Way and SearsStyle Present Jean Scene event in Central Park on August 12, where he also dished about working again with Kellie Pickler, the possibility of celebrity judges, and more!
Wetpaint Entertainment: What attracted you to this event?
Derek Hough: I love coming to New York, and I like to do small dance events here and there where it’s like a one-off for a day or something. It’s fun to come here and be with people I normally don’t get to see because I’m so busy.
What are your thoughts on the show's new format and why you wanted to come back for it?
I think it’s going to make it more exciting, more jam-packed from start to finish. I think the producers have a challenge on their hands to combine both the competition and the results into one show. I think they’re going to do a fantastic job. The past few seasons, what they’ve done has been incredible.
Any possibility of celebrity judges?
You know, I think this season is going to feel new, like a brand new season, regardless of whether there are celebrity judges or not. So we’ll see.
How do you feel about working with Kellie Pickler again?
She’s great, she’s an amazing woman. And she has natural ability so we had a great time. I just did a music video with her, so that was a lot of fun. It was for "Someone, Somewhere, Tonight." It came out a couple of weeks ago.
Can you tell us more about your music?
I’ve done music all my life, since I was a kid. I actually did music before I danced even. I took a break from music for a while, but it was too long. It was way too long. And its one of those things where, if you don’t do something for a while, you get further and further away from it. And for me, I reached a point where I was like, "I can’t live without music any longer." It’s something I have to do — regardless of whether people like it or don’t like it or accept it. If I don’t do it, I’m going to drive myself insane. So I’ll definitely be in the studio soon working on some music and getting that muscle active again.
So what's the scoop on Family Dance Off?
The show I’m hosting, Family Dance Off, it’s on ABC, August 25. I’m really excited about it. People are always coming up to me being like, “When is it my turn to dance? I’m a housewife, I’m not a celebrity, I’m not a professional, but I want to dance.” This show answers that question. It’s for families – so we’ve had cousins, we had a grandma with her kids and grandkids. Three generations and the grandma was twerking! I’m not even kidding you, it was awesome. It’s the kind of show you can watch with your family and be like, “Let’s go try out for that next year.”
