We’ve also got you covered if you’re interested in the latest on his sister, Julianne Hough.
Full Name: Derek Hough
Dance Style: Latin
Season 16 Partner: Kellie Pickler
Derek Hough was born on May 17, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to a Mormon family. In 1998, he and one of his four sisters, Julianne Hough, moved to London to further their dance training with world-renowned dancing couple Corky and Shirley Ballas — the parents of fellow Dancing With the Stars pro Mark Ballas.
While becoming well-rounded in song, dance, theater, and gymnastics, Derek, Julianne, and Mark formed the pop music trio 2B1G (2 Boys, 1 Girl). After Julianne left the group, Derek and Mark created a new band, Almost Amy, which they later rechristened the Ballas Hough Band. The five-person group released a self-titled debut album, BHB, in 2009.
Derek proved his mettle on the dance floor long before his Dancing With the Stars debut in September 2007: along with partner Aneta Piotrowska, he was the 2002 IDSF World Youth Latin Champion for Poland.
Derek made his first appearance on Dancing With the Stars as a guest instructor on Season 4, tutoring his sister Julianne, then a pro, and her partner Apolo Anton Ohno on Week 6 of the competition.
He joined the show as a pro the following season, paired with Jennie Garth, and he’s participated in every season since — with the exception of the spring 2011 competition, which he skipped to film Cobu 3D.
The sibling rivalry heated up between Derek and Julianne during the four seasons they competed against one another: Julianne and her partner Hélio Castroneves took first on Season 5, and Derek snagged his first win with Brooke Burke on Season 7.
Overall, Derek has won three Mirror Ball trophies (with Brooke, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jennifer Grey) and come in second twice (with Ricki Lake and Shawn Johnson). Scroll down for his full stats.
In July 2012, Derek announced that he’d be retiring as a DWTS pro after Season 15. Fortunately for those of us who enjoy ogling him sans shirt, he revealed on February 22, 2013, that he’d be back for Season 16.
A multitalented entertainer, Derek has performed on London’s West End, playing the lead in a 2006 musical version of Footloose. He served as a panelist on Britain’s DanceX in 2007, and he made his Broadway debut in January 2010, starring opposite Kym Johnson and Mary Murphy in Burn the Floor. He’s set to make his big-screen debut in the 2013 film Cobu 3D — his first movie gig since a brief appearance as “Hogwarts Schoolboy” in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Taking their brother-sister talents back to the dance floor, Derek and Julianne will serve as head choreographers on the upcoming Starz series Blackpool, about the annual ballroom competitions that take place in Blackpool, England.
After dating British actress/singer/songwriter India de Beaufort for several years, Derek struck up a Mirror Ball romance with Season 6 partner Shannon Elizabeth. He and Shannon kept the spark alive for one year before parting ways in July 2009.
Derek then dated British pop star Cheryl Cole from 2010 to May 2011.
