Recovering from the alcoholism that nearly killed Deryck Whibley is going to be a long road, but he’s confident that it’s a disease he can overcome. After spending over a month in the hospital, the Sum 41 rocker confirmed earlier this month that he’d been struggling with “hard boozing” that had finally caught up to him.
Now, Deryck’s updating fans on his condition, and letting them know eventually he’ll be back on stage where he belongs.
“I just wanted to thank you all so much for sending gifts and all of the compassion and support you have shown me,” Deryck wrote on his blog. “It really means a lot to me in this time of recovery. I will be better soon and back out on stage before you know it.”
It’s good to hear that Deryck is staying positive, because his condition could easily be a lot worse. When he first announced his hospitalization, he admitted that he now has to cut his ties with drinking permanently because of how serious the effects of his problem on his body had become.
“If I have one drink, the docs say I will die,” Deryck wrote. “I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. I didn’t, and look where that got me.”
Good luck on getting healthy, Deryck! We hope his recovery continues to be smooth sailing from here.
