Dexter Season 8, Episode 10 Recap: “Goodbye Miami”

Vogel and Saxon have breakfast as this episode opens, but struggle to connect since he can't see past his resentment. He leave in a huff.

At Deb's place, Dexter tells Hannah that they can leave Miami as soon as he kills Saxon, thus protecting Vogel. She's surprised that he has, you know, actual human feelings for Vogel, his somewhat-twisted mother figure.

Dex tells Deb about the plans to take flight, and she thinks it's the worst idea in the history of ideas.

Over lunch, Jamie tells Quinn that she got a job offer in Atlanta but doesn't want to take it if it means moving away from him.

Matthews meets with Vogel at Miami Metro and tries to pry into her sessions with Zach, since he's been missing for a while and he's out leads. But she doesn't cough up much, claiming that she doesn't feel comfortable breaching therapist-patient privilege. (We know she's lying, though — Saxon killed Zach.)

Dex is combing through Saxon's violent criminal history when he spots Vogel leaving her meeting. He tries warning her about her son again: "Understand, Evelyn, you are in danger."

"My son isn't going to harm me," she assures him.

She admits that she doesn't know where Saxon is at the moment but urges Dexter not to kill him, even for her sake, saying, "Don't use me as an excuse for killing Daniel."

After she leaves, Dead Dad Harry appears and urges Dex to stay the course: "Dexter, you don't want to leave this unfinished … If you don't kill Saxon, her life is at risk."

Deb and Quinn share a meal, and she fills him in on recent developments: that Dex and Harrison are going to take a year to travel and that Batista gave her her badge back.

The team converges on a crime scene, even Masuka's daughter, Nikki. He realizes she's high. She says that she wasn't expecting to be called on a weekend. He says that they'll talk about it later. (Is he really one to judge?)

Meanwhile, Dex gives his two weeks notice to Batista, offering up a lie about wanting to get away from all the death in his life.

"You need this, don't you?" Gullible Batista says. "I wish you nothing but the best."

Saxon comes to Vogel's house and tells her to get in his truck, saying he has something to show her. She does so, cautiously.

He takes her to his kill room and makes her sit in the very chair in which he his victims sit as he kills them. He explains that he modeled the space after a "treatment room" in the mental institution to which she had him committed.

"I want you to help me like you helped Dexter," he says, "to exist in the world just as I am."

She says that she'll help him: "I want to be your mother again. I'll do whatever it takes."

Hearing this, he hugs her.

Dex breaks into Vogel's house to backtrack the spyware Saxon put on Vogel's computer. He accesses Saxon's hard drive and finds a video of Saxon sawing into Zach's head.

At Miami Metro, Batista is on the phone with a headhunter to backfill Dex's position when Deputy Marshal Clayton comes in, saying that the Hannah McKay case is a low priority now that it has reached an impasse. He asks if he just overhead Batista trying to replace Dexter, and Batista tells him that Dex wants to travel.

At Jamie and Quinn's place, she cooks dinner, unaware of the impending drama.

"It's not working out between us, is it?" Quinn says, abruptly.

"Is that a question?" Jamie says, already defeated.

"No," Quinn replies.

Despite his protests to the contrary, she is sure that his change of heart is directly related to a certain potty-mouthed ex-detective.

Speaking of whom, Deb comes home to find Dex and Hannah hanging out with Hannah on her patio. She tells him that she doesn't want to intrude on his family time.

"It's your family, too," he says.

She seems to have made her peace with the idea of Dex and Harrison leaving, though she admits that she doesn't know what her life looks like without him in it. He tries convincing her that it would be better.

"Hanging out with two serial killers. Doesn't get better than that," she quips as she and Dex join Hannah and Harrison.

The next day, Vogel visits Dex's apartment to tell him her belief that he and Hannah could have a chance in Argentina. He sees through her ploy, realizing that she just wants Dex far away from Saxon. He shows her the video of Saxon killing Zach, trying to make her see that he's just hard-wired to be a murderer.

"You know what needs to happen," he says. "Otherwise, he'll go on killing."

Sensing that she's lowering her defenses, Dex instructs Vogel to set up a meeting with Saxon that night at a public place.

"Please don't let him suffer," she says. He promises he I won't.

Clayton drops by Deb's house as she and Harrison play in the sand. He asks about Dexter and how odd it is that he's leaving after when Hannah is said to have arrived. She covers for the two of them, then goes inside, where Hannah is making lunch, and warns her about Clayton taking up the case again.

"Thank you for protecting me… again," Hannah says.

Deb goes to see Elway to give him her two weeks notice, but he's so fed up with her bull that he doesn't even want her to stick around. He tells her that he'll have the stuff from her office shipped from her, except the case files — even those regarding Hannah McKay — since those are his property.

At Deb's house, Harrison plays with Dexter's treadmill and falls. Hannah sees a deep gash in his chin. She calls Dex, who doesn't pick up. Risking her own freedom, she takes Harrison to the ER, claiming to be his mother as he checks him in. The nurse at the reception desk gives her the hairy eyeball, so to speak.

Dex sets up a kill room as Harry watches. "It's been awhile since we've been in here," he observes.

Deb drops by Miami Metro, passing Jamie on the way to Batista's office. "Hey, Jamie," she says, brightly.

Jamie: "Go f—k yourself."

Deb is confused but gets to the matter at hand, telling Batista that she has definitively decided to come back to the department but that she wants a week or two to tie up loose ends. He also tells her that Quinn broke up with Jamie.

Later, Deb meets up with Quinn and asks Quinn if he broke up with Jamie because of her. He says that he wouldn't have broken it off anyway but does admit to carrying a torch for Deb still, even though he knows it's foolish.

She asks why he's giving up, saying, "I still have feelings for you, stupid."

They kiss, and we don't hate it.

Back at the hospital, Clayton talks to the nurse, who recognized Hannah from the news. He sees that she signed herself in as Debra Morgan.

Back home, Hannah and Dex look at Harrison's war wound: he got six stitches but seems perfectly chirpy. Hannah feels bad that it happened on her watch; Dex feels bad that he wasn't reachable.

Just then, Vogel calls; saying that made the rendezvous with Saxon at her house for privacy, despite his instructions to meet him somewhere private. Saxon arrives at her house at that moment.

Dex sets out, but hesitates before getting in his car, worried that Clayton is going to come back to Deb's house.

"You're trying to live in two different worlds, and it's got you paralyzed," warns Harry.

Vogel sits Saxon down for tea, but she's visibly nervous. Saxon notices.

"You know, when you see as many people die as I have, you know when they're afraid. What are you afraid of, mother?"

Right as Dex reaches Vogel's house, Saxon calls him on his cell phone, telling Dex to look at the window. Vogel is facing the window, with Saxon immediately behind her.

As Dex watches, helpless, Saxon slices Vogel's throat.

Dex rushes to her side, but it's too late to stop the bleeding — and Saxon seems to be long gone.

Only two episodes left. See you next Sunday, Dexter fans.
