Dexter is saying goodbye on Sunday, September 22. It marks the end of the seven-year Showtime series, and also the end of Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter working through their own personal ups and downs.
The series started in 2006, with Michael and Jennifer playing brother and sister, Dexter and Debra Morgan. Michael and his first wife, Amy Spanger, divorced later that year. He and Jennifer started dating, and got married in 2008; sadly, they split up in 2010 and are now divorced.
You'd think it would be painfully awkward to still work every day with your ex, especially when these characters are so close together and have their own odd love story. (And there were those rumors about Julia Stiles...)
But if it was awkward, the actors covered it well. While at the Farewell to Dexter event at the Paley Center, an audience member boldly asked Michael and Jennifer, "How was it working together after divorce?"
Instead of responding with a "No comment" or "None of your dang business," they both proved their professionalism with classy replies. "It's gratifying, honestly," Michael said (via E! News). "The fact that Jennifer and I worked through whatever was going on with us personally in the way we did and maintained our commitment to telling this story was never in question. It was always what we needed and wanted to do."
According to E!, Jennifer actually choked up a bit as she told the crowd, "I feel like marriage is sort of like a generic label. Our marriage didn't look like anyone else's. And our divorce didn't either. So, I've said it before and we've said it before. Just because the marriage ended doesn't mean the love did. It's an awkward thing to talk about your personal life in front of a bunch of strangers, but there's nothing but love and respect. Nothing."
Nice. There probably were some tough moments (otherwise why split at all?), but time heals most wounds. And it has to bond the entire cast for life to make a show like this and watch it close — hopefully in spectacular fashion. They both did great work and we can’t wait to see the final results.
