Did Devin Velez Deserve to Go Home on American Idol 2013, March 28?

Tonight the American Idol Top 8 was cut down to the Top 7, as one contestant was sent home. Viewers must have had a tough time deciding, but ultimately Devin Velez was sent packing after receiving the fewest number of votes.

Despite having a strong voice respected and praised by the American Idol judges, Devin often faced the criticism that he wasn’t connecting with his songs emotionally. Mentor Jimmy Iovine also cautioned him from being too safe with his song choices, saying there was a fine line between sounding retro and sounding old-fashioned.

During last night’s Season 12 Top 8 performance show, Devin’s version of Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks of My Tears” was a great albeit traditional take on the song. While the judges seemed to like his rendition, they noted again that it lacked some emotional connection and perhaps did not show his personality enough.

What might have influenced America’s vote though was the group guys performance of the Four Tops’ “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” which saw Devin Velez, Burnell Taylor, and Lazaro Arbos struggle to make the song work.

Do you think Devin should have gone home, or should the judges have used their save? Let us know by choosing one of the reaction buttons below!
