Did Glee Dis Katy Perry in Season 5, Episode 4: “A Katy or a Gaga”?
There’s no doubt that Glee loves Katy Perry. The show has covered plenty of her songs over the past four years. In fact, Blaine’s (Darren Criss) cover of “Teenage Dream” is probably one of the most recognized Glee songs of all time.
But when the show did its Katy Perry vs. Lady Gaga episode for November 7’s Season 5, Episode 4: “A Katy or a Gaga,” we couldn’t help but notice that the whole thing seemed a bit, well, anti-Katy.
The episode didn’t contain any harsh, outright Katy Perry disses, but the theme running through the episode was clear. Katy Perry is safe and cookie-cutter; Lady Gaga is edgy and out-there. Right from the outset, the New Directions were asked to decide if they were a Katy or a Gaga. And then the show spent the rest of the episode throwing subtle jabs the Katys’s way.
“You are such a Katy,” Jake told Marley at one point. “I don’t know how you’re going to pull off Gaga.”
Elsewhere, Sam was upset to find out that his new crush, Penny, who appeared at first to be a Katy, now seemed to actually be an edgy Gaga. As a self-admitted Katy — his guilty pleasure is Nickelodeon teen shows — Sam worried that Penny would never think he was cool enough to date.
What do you think: By portraying Katy as safe, wholesome, and all-American in comparison to edgy, exciting, and fun Gaga, was Glee dissing the “Firework” pop star? Sound off below to let us know what you think!
