Divergent Makes HOW MUCH During Its Opening Weekend? (VIDEO)
The odds are ever in Tris Prior's favor!
Oops — wrong franchise. Still, the plucky teenager at the heart of Divergent captivated millions of moviegoers this weekend, the first weekend of release for the YA film adaptation.
The movie earned $56 million over the three-day span, which gave it the top spot in the box office this weekend and earns the movie the second-best opening of 2014, just behind The Lego Movie.
It's also the eighth-best March debut ever, according to Box Office Mojo. Number one on that list? The Hunger Games, which raked in more than twice that amount in one weekend — $152.5 million, to be exact — when it hit theaters in March 2012. (Catching Fire did even better, earning $158.1 million in its first weekend.)
Divergent fell just shy of the first Twilight movie's first-weekend earnings — $69.6 million.
While the box office debut wasn't quite as revolutionary as box office prognosticators had predicted, it still gives the film a major leg up toward recouping its $85 million budget.
But never mind the competition — it appears we have a Dauntless hit on our hands!
