Do the Glee Stars Sing Live?

Each week the cast and crew of Glee does the seemingly impossible by putting together performance after performance overflowing with great vocals and stellar choreography. Do they do it all live? Enquiring fans want to know.

The answer to this query is a definite no. Just like most TV shows, Glee is filmed ahead of time. That means scenes can be shot multiple times. Actors get a chance to try again if they make a mistake, and we can see the same scene from many angles, which allows the editors to create a rich, exciting, visually dynamic show.

Plus, most of the time we aren't hearing the actors singing on set. For the majority of the show, the songs are recorded in a studio and then dubbed over the visuals, often after going through some autotune correction, much to some fans' chagrin. There have been a few exceptions to this rule — for instance, Darren Criss performed live twice on the show during his stunning acoustic performance of "Teenage Dream" for Season 4 Episode 4: "The Break-Up," as well as during his moving performance of "Against All Odds" in Season 4 Episode 17: "Guilty Pleasures."

That said, the Glee stars are certainly skilled enough to perform live. Many of them have theater background, and they all rocked the Glee live tour.
