Many fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones have strong opinions about the show’s penchant for killing off its main characters. Some think it keeps the show fresh and unpredictable, while others find it to be too heartbreaking. But how do the stars of the show feel after getting whacked on camera?

Michelle Fairley, who portrayed the late Catelyn Stark on GoT, discussed that very topic in an interview with 891 ABC Adelaide. And she has a strong opinion about the subject — and it's positive!

“That’s what’s so clever about the books and the series," she explained. "Nobody is safe, I think it’s incredibly brave to kill off main characters... You open up the floodgates to other characters who weren’t in the forefront.”

It’s certainly brave, considering the amount of backlash the Red Wedding in particular has received from fans. But Michelle also has a point about the opportunities the occasional house cleaning does for the show’s other characters. With Robb Stark and Cat Stark no longer taking up time, maybe we’ll get more of the Hound. Maybe we’ll see more of Bran and finally figure out why he’s magic and just what his purpose is on the show. Maybe we’ll see more of that slimy power-grubbing Littlefinger (where has he been?).

The point is, Game of Thrones juggles a lot of characters, so an occasional thinning of the herd is necessary to keep things moving along. Just trust us when we say this: George R. R. Martin knows what he’s doing.
