Dolly Parton: Miley Cyrus “Doesn’t Have to Be So Drastic”

Miley Cyrus may have been in the business of shocking everyone around her, but no matter how she’s changed over the past year, Miley’s family has remained loyal. So when Miley made this year’s Time 100 Most Influential People list, her godmother, legendary country singer Dolly Parton, was the perfect person to write about Miley’s influence on pop culture.

“If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her,” Dolly admits in her essay. “But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing.”

We agree with Miley — as erratic as her behavior may seem sometimes, we have a hunch Miley’s every teddy bear leotard-laden move is precise and calculated. And guess what? It’s worked.

“She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever,” Dolly continues, “And she was just smotherin’ and chokin’ on it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did.”

But just because Dolly understands why Miley makes the choices she does doesn’t mean that this old-fashioned fairy godmother condones how… naked they are.

“I’m hoping that now she can relax and show people how talented she really is,” the 68-year-old “Jolene” singer says. “‘Cause the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart. And she doesn’t have to be so drastic. But I will respect her choices. I did it my way, so why can’t she do it her way?”

Miley, you heard the woman! Button up your shirt and call your godmother.
