Dan Stevens, better known as Downton Abbey’s beloved Matthew Crawley, barely looks like himself anymore! This once golden English muffin not only dyed his hair dark, he’s lost almost 30 pounds since January.
As Dan told British TV host Graham Norton, that much weight “in British terms, is about two to three chins.” Oh how he does make us laugh!
Why the drastic change? No, Dan’s not hiding from devoted Downton fans still upset by his untimely and gruesome exit from the hit BBC show last Christmas. The transformation is all for his art.
“It was for a role,” he explained. “It’s always me, just different incarnations, different roles, different costumes, and different sizes.”
Phew. We were beginning to worry there was an evil Matthew twin wandering around Hollywood though, now that we think about it, two Dan Stevens wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
We definitely could use the extra TLC as we continue to recover from Cousin Matthew’s fatal auto accident at the end of Season 3. Although Dan admits it was his decision to leave the show — what did we do wrong?! — he’s not 100 percent happy with his character’s demise.
“I knew Matthew would die, but not like that necessarily,” he said on The Graham Norton Show.
During the BBC1 program, Graham showed Dan some of the millions of tweets sent out the day of Matthew’s death, including “EVERYTHING WAS HAPPY WHAT THE ****! MY MOM CRIED, MY CAT CRIED, WHAT THE **** MY WHOLE LIFE IS RUINED I WANT TO DIE!”
Oops. We thought we deleted that tweet!
