Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) sure is getting a lot of new men in her life for Downton Abbey Season 4. Forget that her husband, Matthew (Dan Stevens), has only been dead for about an episode. Love is about to come pounding at Lady Mary’s door — we’re just not sure how open she’ll be to letting it in.
We’ve already heard that Mary will have a number of potential new boyfriends, including a very attractive new suitor named Lord Gillingham. Now, TVLine reports that U.S. comedic actor Paul Giamatti has been cast in the Season 4 Christmas special. And yes, there’s a Lady Mary connection!
So is the goofy Sideways and Cinderella Man actor going to play yet another potential love interest for Mary? Not so much! Instead, Paul will take on the role of Mary’s uncle, Harold Levinson — the “maverick, playboy” brother of her mama, Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern).
What are you feeling right now? Relief? Excitement? We don’t think Mary and Harold would have been a very good match, but we definitely can imagine some potentially hilarious scenes as he potentially tried to woo her.
So far, his character will only appear in the finale, where he’ll join returning guest star Shirley MacLaine (Cora and Harold’s mother, Martha). What’s more, it sounds like both of the visiting Americans will cause quite a ruckus! TV Line teases that Paul’s “free-spirited” character and his mother will “upset the Grantham’s apple cart” in the finale.
Sounds like we’re in for a bit of a cliffhanger...and a whole lot of bruised, squished apples.
