Months later, and the finale of Downton Abbey’s third season continues to haunt us. In less than two hours, we went from such startling heights — Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) doesn’t die in childbirth! — to such depressing lows — no more Matthew (Dan Stevens)? Ever?!
The Christmas special left us battered and bruised, questioning where our beloved British drama would take us next. Honestly, after the twists and turns of last year, we’re more than a little anxious about what Season 4 might hold.
Well, fear not! Executive producer Gareth Neame says Season 4 will be “very different” from Season 3’s ending.
“The [Season 1 finale] was really different from the second, and the second one was very different [from the third],” says Neame. Yes, that just might be the most non-spoiler of a spoiler we’ve ever heard. Still, different is good, right?
We already know the Downton crew has big things planned for Season 4. For one thing, Paul Giamatti will join the cast as Mary’s American uncle, the troublesome and free-spirited Harold Levinson. Starring as the “maverick playboy brother” of Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern), Giamatti’s bound to stir up trouble when he arrives on English soil for the season finale.
Also set to appear at the Abbey: a slew of new characters including a couple potential love interests for the widow Mary. After the one-two punch of Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) and Matthew’s deaths, we could use a little fun and so, now that the show’s reached the Roaring '20s, we’re officially requesting a Great Gatsby-like rager. We want jazz. We want flappers. We want bubbly.
