After Matthew Crawley’s (Dan Stevens) grisly exit at the end of Season 3, it’s easy to forget how devastated we were upon the death of Lady Sybil Crawley (Jessica Brown-Findlay). It’s not that we’ve forgotten Sybil — as if! — but more that the overwhelming and surprising loss of Matthew momentarily clouded our fond memories of Downton’s resident rebel.
Sadly, though, our forgetfulness doesn’t help those Sybil left behind, namely a brand new baby girl and hubby Tom Branson (Allen Leech). Does Season 4 offer any ray of sunshine in the grief-stricken lives of Tom and lil Sybil?
There was a potential new love interest on the horizon during last season’s Christmas special. Remember that mischievous blonde maid who “accidentally” walked in on Tom while he was changing? At the time, good ole Tom said he wasn’t ready, which was great because we didn’t like that rule-breaking maid anyway. Nor, if you recall, did Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) who axed the maid after hearing of her lack of decorum. Not in this house, Goldilocks!
By Season 4, however, it sounds as if Tom’s open to love (it has been more than a year since Sybil died). So who’s the lucky lady? It’s new cast member Daisy Lewis; the 28-year-old British bombshell will join the Abbey as Sarah Bunting, the Downton schoolteacher.
“Her romance with Tom will be one of the main storylines of the series,” according to The Daily Mail. “He will begin to develop feelings for her and they start a secret affair.”
All in all, this sounds much better than the original rumors that Tom and sister-in-law Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) would be brought together over their shared grief — a plan that sounds just a little too all in the family even for the cousin-marryin’ Crawleys.
